West Wing Writers
Workshops
West Wing Writers teaches the art of speechwriting to public servants, private sector professionals, undergraduates, and graduate students in the United States and abroad.

Our lectures, seminars, and training workshops are designed to convey not just practical skills but a passion for the craft — drawing on nearly a combined century of executive speechwriting experience.

Our approach is highly interactive, incorporating hands-on exercises, review and analysis of real-life speeches, and close examination of rhetorical technique. We equip participants with the tools and strategies they need to master any speechwriting challenge, from the moment the speech is assigned to when the client takes the stage.

Participants learn the fundamentals of speechwriting with style, including:

  • Writing for the ear;
  • Asking the right questions about the occasion and the audience;
  • Focusing the message;
  • Finding inspiration;
  • Conducting efficient research;
  • Capturing the speaker's voice;
  • Creating memorable beginnings and meaningful conclusions;
  • Crafting persuasive arguments;
  • Incorporating storytelling and humor;
  • Harnessing the power of rhetorical devices;
  • Polishing the draft;
  • Formatting the text for successful delivery; and
  • Amplifying the speech's message beyond the auditorium.

The format can be tailored from a 90-minute presentation to a multi-day training workshop, and adjusted to address participants' specific interests and communications concerns. Experience includes:

  • Center for Strategic and International Studies (Washington, DC)
  • Cision (Stockholm, Sweden; Oslo, Norway; and Helsinki, Finland)
  • Geneva Center for Security Policy (Geneva, Switzerland)
  • George Washington University (Washington, DC)
  • Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (Washington, DC)
  • Lockheed Martin Corporation (Bethesda, MD)
  • National Council of State Legislators (Providence, RI)
  • Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Oslo, Norway)
  • Samhällsnytta AB (Stockholm, Sweden)
